Initially, Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT) was founded in 1982, it was operated under the name Odisha College of Engineering (OCE) and was managed directly by the Odisha government. Before then, the institution known as Modern Polytechnic (MPT) has been providing diploma programs in mining survey engineering, civil, electrical, mechanical, and survey engineering since 1981.
In the year 1987, both OCE & MPT were merged and renamed IGIT, Sarang and the management was transferred to an Autonomous Society. The Institute currently offers undergraduate, graduate, doctorate, and diploma programs in engineering. All B. Tech, B.Arch, MCA, MSc. Ph. D & M. Tech Courses affiliated to Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Rourkela. All Diploma Courses are affiliated with the State Council for Technical Education & Vocational Training, Odisha, Bhubaneswar The institute has advanced intellectually to the national level in under thirty years. This is the first Govt. Engg. College in the state to have accreditation from NBA (AICTE) because of its academic excellence.
